Corporate Immigration — Indonesia Introducing Transitional Residence Permit (Bridging Visa) Policy for Foreigners
Santa Fe publication date
13 May 2024
Overview
Indonesia has introduced Transitional Residence Permit (Bridging Visa) policy which enables foreigners to stay in the country while they are processing their new resident permits.
Who will be affected?
- Foreigners holding visit visas applied through evisa.imigrasi.go.id.
- Limited Stay Permits (ITAS) and Permanent Stay Permits (ITAP) holders that can no longer be extended.
Background
The Indonesian government has recently introduced a ‘bridging visa’ policy to ease the procedures for foreigners in renewing residence permits. It serves as a ‘bridge’ between previous residence permits and obtaining new ones. Under this policy, foreigners can renew their residence permits without leaving the country.
Impact
- Foreigners holding a Transitional Residence Permit are not subject to overstay if their Transitional Residence Permit application is approved before expiration of their previous residence permit.
- The validity period of the Transitional Residence Permit is 60 days and is only valid onshore (for foreigners who are already in Indonesian territory).
- The Transitional Residence Permit is no longer valid if the foreigner leaves Indonesian territory.
- Foreigners who wish to use the Transitional Residence Permit must submit an application through the evisa.imigrasi.go.id website and settle the immigration fee payment no later than 3 days before the validity period of their previous residence permit expires.
- With the Transitional Residence Permit, foreigners holding Visit Visas applied through evisa.imigrasi.go.id are allowed to obtain Limited Stay Permits (ITAS) without having to leave Indonesian territory.
- Holders of Limited Stay Permits (ITAS) and Permanent Stay permits (ITAP) that can no longer be extended can obtain new Residence Permits without having to leave Indonesian territory.
Date of implementation
The implementation of the bridging visa is regulated in the Minister of Law and Human Rights Regulation No. 11 of 2024 which came into effect on 1 April 2024.
Santa Fe recommendation
The bridging visa is particularly designed for foreigners whose current permits are nearing expiration and need to extend their residence permit or who require to change their residence permit status due to employment or personal reason without leaving Indonesia.
The bridging visa is a solution for seamlessly extending stay in Indonesia while awaiting a new visa. This service helps foreign nationals avoid overstaying and ensures the smooth continuation of their activities in Indonesia.
