Destination Services update — Exchange agreement for UK and Italian driving licence
Following the Agreement signed on 23 December 2022 related to the exchanging of driving licences, starting from 30 March 2023 it will be possible to proceed with exchanging a UK licence for an Italian one.
The agreement will be applicable for all full, non-provisional and valid UK licences.
Holders who became residents in Italy on or before 31 December 2020 can exchange their UK licence at any time whilst holders who became residents in Italy on or after 1 January 2021 can only proceed with the exchange within 6 years of becoming residents.
Please be aware that, in any case, it would be possible to drive with a UK driving licence for a maximum of 1 year from when the residency will be taken whilst a person already a resident before the 30th of March 2023 will have to proceed with the conversion within the end of the year.
If a UK licence derives from another licence issued by a third country (so from a previous exchange) it would be possible to proceed only if there is an agreement in place between that country and Italy.
