Immigration update: Nigeria | E-migrants mandatory registration programme
E-migrants mandatory registration programme
The e-registration process was launched in July 2019 and requires every foreign national residing in Nigeria to register with the Nigerian Immigration Service by 12 January 2020.
Who is affected:
This will affect all foreign nationals who are resident in Nigeria.
Background:
The Federal Government of Nigeria introduced the e-Migrants registration exercise requiring all foreign nationals to capture their biometric information within 90 days of entering the country. The purpose of this initiative is to enhance national security and improve internal monitoring and record keeping as this information will be linked with national identity eco-system to generate a unique number that will eventually connect to all identity system in Nigeria.
Any foreign national who fails to register within the prescribed period will be declared as an illegal immigrant.
The exercise can be done country-wide in all Nigerian Immigration Service Command Headquarters.
Impact:
This will have very little impact on Immigration to Nigeria as the intention of this process is to improve service delivery in Nigeria as a whole. Failure to comply with the mandatory registration will however lead to an individual being declared an illegal immigrant.
How Santa Fe can assist:
Santa Fe can support businesses who wish to employ foreign nationals in Nigeria by assessing their eligibility to qualify for the required work permits to ensure compliance with the immigration rules. We can also review current employees’ work authorizations and if it is found that the correct work permit is not in place we can assist with corrective measures to ensure compliance.
We can also keep your business updated on further developments in Nigerian immigration matters and will advise on any changes requiring your attention.
