Immigration update: Switzerland | End of labour market protection measures for Croatian nationals
End of labour market protection measures for Croatian nationals
Croatia has been an EU state member since 2013, however, according to the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons (AFMP) between Switzerland and the EU (Protocol III to the FZA), Switzerland has maintained labour market protection measures for Croatian nationals.
With the recent announcement of the Swiss Federal Council about the unrestricted freedom of movement for Croatian nationals they will be treated on equal terms as other EU / EFTA nationals and can follow the EU/EFTA national immigration process. This will take effect on January 1, 2022.
The Swiss immigration authorities reserve the right to invoke a safeguard clause to limit the number of permits subject to the number of Croatian workers immigrating to Switzerland. Period January 1, 2023.
