Corporate Immigration — Malaysia: Xpats Gateway to shorten expatriate work permit processing time
The Minister of Economic Affairs has announced the implementation of a new system called Xpats Gateway, aimed at shortening the application process and improving efficiency.
Background
The phased implementation of the Xpats Gateway system will begin on 15 June, 2023, with the development led by TalentCorp. The second phase will involve integration with existing systems of agencies such as the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) by 15 August, 2023.
Impact
The main objective of this new system is to streamline the approval process for Employment Pass (EP) applications and expedite it for greater efficiency. Sectors not under the purview of Approving Regulatory Bodies will still require employers to obtain Support Letters directly from the respective agencies, until the full implementation of Xpats Gateway.
Currently, the process for hiring professional expatriates and obtaining their employment pass can take up to 80 days, depending on the sector. With the introduction of the new system, the visa application and approval process is expected to be significantly shortened to as little as 20 days or even less.
