Brussels
Known as one of the most influential cities in Europe, Brussels is home to NATO and the European Union. Whether it’s a political summit or one of the many festivals held here every year, there’s always something going on in Brussels. The city is divided into 19 municipalities, which makes it feel like an aggregate of towns, each with distinct personalities. Brussels is also renowned for its wide array of architectural styles, from the Renaissance charm of the Grand Place to the postmodernism seen at the EU Parliament. Luxembourg City
The capital of the country of the same name, Luxembourg City is one of the most important banking and financial centres in Europe. It has the highest GDP per capita in the world and is also home to several EU institutions, such as the European Court of Justice and the European Investment Bank. However it isn’t all big business here, and there are plenty of attractions to keep people busy. Most of the sights are found in the upper old town and lower old town, but wherever you go you’ll be met with stunning architecture that really makes the city stand out. Amsterdam
One of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, Amsterdam is home to over 170 different nationalities. With hundreds of kilometres of canals running through it, as well as 90 islands and 1500 bridges, it’s no wonder it’s been called the ‘Venice of the North’. Amsterdam provides a laid-back lifestyle and an informal atmosphere, which is unusual for a city of its size. Art lovers will love the Rijksmuseum, which has been described as the Dutch Louvre, as well as the museums based on Van Gogh and Rembrandt, two of the best known local artists.
Bruges
Bruges is a perfectly preserved1 medieval town that’s endowed with romantic canals and picturesque streets. It was once one of Europe’s great textile manufacturing and trading centres, twice the size of London back in 1500. Unfortunately the river linking it to the sea silted, causing many of the merchants to leave Bruges, taking their business elsewhere. The Grote Markt, Belfort and Lakenhalle are not to be missed, nor are the statues of Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck, heroes of the Battle of the Golden Spurs, standing in the centre of the market square.
Antwerp
Europe’s second largest port, Antwerp is one of the world’s main diamond trading centres. In fact, 85 per cent of the world’s rough diamonds and half of the polished diamonds are negotiated in this city. It also has fashion designers, theatres and museums galore, as well as an extremely high density of cultural venues per capita. The Renaissance market square, town hall, Gothic cathedral, medieval castle and more combine to give Antwerp a truly stunning environment. You’ll also find Antwerp’s zoological gardens, which is one of the oldest and most famous zoos in the world, holding more than 5,000 animals.
