Immigration update: Malaysia | I-KAD Issuance ceased in Malaysia
I-KAD ISSUANCE CEASED IN MALAYSIA
The Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) has announced that the issuance of i-Kad has CEASED effective 17 July 2019. Therefore, expatriates who are eligible to apply for an i-Kad can no longer do so until further notice from JIM.
Who will be affected?
All eligible expatriates holding Employment Pass (EP) Category I and II and Residence Pass Talent (RP-T).
Background:
Immigration has previously introduced i-Kad which can be used by expatriates as an identification document while they are in Malaysia. This is to enable them to travel in Malaysia without having to carry their passport. However, as of 17 July 2019, i-Kad will no longer be issued.
Impact:
All expatriates are required to carry their original passports as identification document while working and residing in Malaysia.
Santa Fe Analysis:
Companies should take note that there will no longer be i-Kad issued for their employees and to ensure that their employees carry their passport while working and residing in Malaysia.
Companies should not expect an i-Kad for all situations i.e. new applications, renewal applications and replacement of a missing or lost i-Kad.
