Immigration update: Malaysia extends recovery MCO to 31st March 2021
The recovery movement control order (RMCO) in Malaysia has been extended to 31st March 2021.
The recovery MCO for Malaysia and the conditional MCO for all three states was initially scheduled to end on 31st December 2020. Owing to the upward trend in COVID-19 positive cases in the three states within Malaysia, the conditional MCO (CMCO) in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Sabah has been extended until 14th January 2021.
Who are affected?
The citizens of Malaysia and foreign nationals residing in Malaysia.
Background
Malaysia had entered a recovery phase regarding the COVID19 pandemic. The order related to this is made under the Prevention Act and Infectious Disease Control 1988 and Police Act 1967. The RMCO was to end on the 31st August 2020, however it was extended to 31st December 2020.
The Government of Malaysia had announced to implement the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) for certain areas of Peninsular Malaysia and which was extended until 31st December 2020.
The Health Ministry conducted risk assessments and found that cases were still increasing significantly.
The government agreed to extend the recovery MCO nationwide to 31st March 2021.
Impact
As of now, the borders are still closed and non-essential international travel is restricted.
Implementation
Effective from 1st January 2021 to 31st March 2021.
