Corporate Immigration — Italy: Update of residence permits issued to non-EU citizens and family members of EU citizens
Italy has recently introduced a new update regarding the issuance of “carte di soggiorno” to non-EU citizens and family members of EU citizens. The law aims to streamline and improve the immigration process, ensuring fair and efficient procedures.
EU citizen’s family members with paper residence permits must submit an application for an electronic residence permit card, as the paper permits will no longer be valid as of August 3, 2023. Applicants can submit their electronic permit applications at an Italian post office or police headquarters.
Another update introduced is related to the old Permit to stay with the title ‘Permessso UE per soggiornanti di Lungo Periodo // UE Permit to stay for a long period’ with an indeterminate validity. According to the new law introduced by the Law 238/2021, those new permits to stay should be updated with new validity of 10 years.
Who will be affected?
The following updates will affect all the older or the previous paper version of the carta di soggiorno. Santa Fe can assist you in filling out the request for the new one and the following step.
Impact
Effectively from 3rd August 2023, all holders of the old permit should have requested the update to the new version, traveling with the outdated version of the permit may lead to issues with the authority of other Schengen Countries (whilst they are always allowed to travel back and forth from the Origin Country).

Santa Fe recommendation
We recommend that all holders of the old permit style should update to the new version at the earliest to avoid any issues with travel.
