Corporate Moving — Panama Canal shipping pileup reaches 154 vessels as drought continues
A severe drought affecting the Panama Canal has created a backlog of over 154 vessels waiting to use the canal, disrupting commercial shipping. The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has reported that the dry weather conditions across Central America have caused a lack of water in Lake Gatun. This lake is a vital canal waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The dry conditions have significantly lowered the water levels in the lake, creating a significant bottleneck for vessels attempting to pass through the canal.
In response, the ACP has implemented emergency measures, including suspending all vehicle crossings and requesting that vessels restrict their passage widths. The ACP has also taken the additional step of reducing draughts for some vessels, allowing ships to carry more cargo and pass through the canal. Despite these measures, the backlog still stands at 154 vessels, with some industry experts predicting this figure could double in the coming weeks.
The drought has already caused concern among shipping companies, with several flotillas postponing their passage through the canal. Industry leaders are now calling on the ACP to take further steps to reduce the disruption. “We understand the ACP has taken action to respond to the situation, but more needs to be done to reduce the disruption to global shipping lanes,” said Pedro Herrera, director of the Panamanian Chamber of Shipping. The ACP has yet to comment on the developing situation but has previously said it would take necessary steps to ensure the continued safe passage of vessels through the canal.
